Kevin Facey, Principal
John Dewey, stated in the Nineteenth century,” school is a microcosm of a society”. I believe that when Dewey expressed this idea, he just meant that the school sees much of the same issues that are at play in the society at that time but I believe that school has to find ways and means to effect positive changes in the lives of students. I believe that the activities inside and outside of the classroom are meant to develop character, good habits and improve quality of life for students.
Dr M. Morris, one of our former principals, regularly said to her students,” you are as good as any and better than many”; she was convinced that our students had to see themselves the way she did; creative, talented, brilliant and valuable. I think she understood that if our students had the correct view of themselves, they would become agents of positive change in their families and communities. I continue to meet and hear stories of our past students who have improved their workplaces and homes by living out the words of Dr M. Morris.
“Opportunity is nowhere (now here)” was a phrase often used by our former Principal Michael Peart. I think that he wanted our students to understand that while they may not have been able to control much of the circumstances that they were born into, they were able to make positive changes to their lives by having the correct perspective. Opportunities could arise in difficult situations if an individual recognized the moment and took the correct actions.
Reverends Madge Saunders and Henry Ward, our founders, sought to create a place to provide students with opportunities to develop in a balanced or wholistic manner. A place, at the foot of the Chancery and Red Hills, where boys and girls could grow into the men and women who will let their lights shine before men so others would see their good works and glorify their Heavenly Father. I believe the principals who served before me had this mission and, God willingly those who will serve after me must continue in this vein.
Welcome to the family that is Meadowbrook High School and we look forward to that which you will add to us.
